Katou Motohiro backlist (Q.E.D., C.M.B., Rocket Man)

Kodansha already released Q.E.D. Shomei Shuryo volume 29 and C.M.B. -Shinra Hakubutsukan no Jiken Mokuroku-) volume 7 last 15 February 2008.

The time has come, the Walrus said, to upload 's .

(Actually, there were no announcements, ponderous or otherwise; I simply discovered that already released Q.E.D. Shomei Shuryo volume 29 and C.M.B. -Shinra Hakubutsukan no Jiken Mokuroku- volume 7 last 15 February 2008. So now seemed like an opportune time as any to post—before the backlist grows more unwieldly.)

Caveats:
Some information deduced from skimming Google translations of Japanese pages.
Assumption that Akutoreiza = ActRaiser (as in the virtual console game), due to circumstantial evidence.

These and other landmine-ridden conditions obtaining, I apologize in advance for mistakes and weasel wording likely to rear up.

アクトレイザー Akutoreiza

As intimated earlier, I speculate that Katou Motohiro-sensei's アクトレイザー series which gets romanized as is kin to ActRaiser, the action-simulation game published by (which also published this manga). If anyone has information to the contrary (or would like to donate some cover thumbs), do leave me a comment. Thank you.

C.M.B. 森羅博物館の事件目録 C.M.B. -Shinra Hakubutsukan no Jiken Mokuroku-

C.M.B.: Shinra's Cabinet of Curiosities - Case files represents my very liberal, falls short of creative attempt at translating the manga title (Google's is C.M.B. Ra Mori museum catalogue incident—ask me first then if you want to use my version and/or any of my editorial commentary elsewhere). I based my variant on Wunderkammer, the name, so I'm told, of the museum managed by protagonist ; artifacts Shinra investigates eventually make their home there. C.M.B. stands for the Latin phrase Christus mansionem benedicat (May Christ bless this house), traditionally written in chalk above church and house doors on the Feast of the Epiphany. Part of the phrase also appears on the manga covers. The same initials denote the names of the biblical Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.

In the context of the manga, Sakaki Shinra is heir to a ring (or three rings, I'm not sure) on which the letters C.M.B. are engraved. Shinra—similar to Q.E.D.'s —has a mysterious past; is multi-lingual (English, Latin, and five others); possesses college-level knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, and history; and is deficient in social skills. Why the blond 14-year-old holds the ring, its nature and purpose, as well as why Shinra is the curator of a bizarre museum in Tokyo are backstory mysteries I look forward to being solved when/if (or Del Rey) decides to license this manga. C.M.B.'s symbolism and relevance to the story are apparently unlike the correspondence of the MAGI super computer system that runs Tokyo-3 and the NERV HQ in Neon Genesis Evangelion; they do, however, seem to have historical ties with English monarchs and the British Museum in some sort of arcane guardians of knowledge cabal.

With the exception of volume two and seven, chapter titles come from the Japanese Wikipedia C.M.B. entry.

As at this post's publication, the series is still ongoing: latest released was volume seven (15 February 2008 street date). The manga is serialized in Kodansha's Gekkan Shounen Magazine. is also published in Traditional Chinese by Tong Li (Hongkong) as C.M.B. Sen Luo Bo Wu Guan Zhi Shi Jian Mu Lu.

Q.E.D.証明終了 Q.E.D. Shomei Shuryo

Echoing my Indonesian Q.E.D. post, chapter numbering follows the installment order in Magazine GREAT, as reported by Wikipedia JP. Chapter titles are a combination of Japanese Wiki provisions and Indonesian/my translations. The series remains current, with the most recent tankoubon 29 released on 15 February 2008.

Tong Li publishes in Traditional Chinese, under the title Wonder Little Detective. In Indonesia, Elex Media releases this manga as Q.E.D. (Quod Erat Demonstrandum). For more information on the series, see my review.

ロケットマン Rocket Man

Serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Shounen mangazine starting November 2001, this Katou Motohiro-sensei series follows the espionage exploits of the mysterious R and his agency's alleged interest in a much-bullied Japanese high school boy with a conveniently missing past (I can't decipher his name, but he's the story's A boy meets Rocket Man lead). Like C.M.B.'s Sakaki Shinra and Touma Sou of Q.E.D., our young hero has a female friend who accompanies him into trouble. His chara design is Touma-clone; R, on the other hand, reminds me of Rocky/Loki (Sid Green) of Q.E.D.

The Rocket Man series concluded serialization in January 2005; ten volumes were compiled by February 2005. It has been translated into Traditional Chinese (Tong Li) and German (Heyne Verlag).

According to the Japanese Wikipedia entry, chapter titles are nods to/parodies of other works, usually from the science-/speculative fiction genre. (R himself is apparently codenamed after R is for Rocket by science fiction meister Ray Bradbury.) Creds nashi notwithstanding, I blather about these allusions in small type.

Something Wicked This Way Comes is a 1962 novel by Ray Bradbury.
The Crystal World is an early dystopian novel by English author J. G. Ballard.
One way reportedly alludes to James Tiptree, Jr., one of the pseudonyms of colorful American science fiction author Alice B. Sheldon.
The Gods Themselves is a 1972 science fiction novel by Isaac Asimov, one of SF's Big Three with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke. The novel won both a Nebula and a Hugo for Best Novel.

Travel over tomorrow is reportedly a reference to American science fiction writer Robert Sheckley who was honored with the title Author Emeritus by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 2001.
When voices is another reference to J. G. Ballard
Growth ceremony is reportedly an allusion to Alexei Panshin, the American author and science fiction critic who wrote the 1968 Nebula Award-winner Rite of Passage.
Small world ending supposedly adverts to Mordecai Roshwald who wrote the post-apocalyptic science-fiction novel Level 7.

The Door into Summer is a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein.
Endless Battle appears to be equivalent to the 1974 novel The Forever War by American science fiction author Joe Haldeman.
Best-selling American author Orson Scott Card wrote the novels Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead (to which Advocate for the dead presumably refers). Both works won the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, making Card the only author (as of 2007) to win both of science fiction's top prizes in consecutive years.
The Cold Equations is a controversial hard science fiction short story by author Tom Godwin.

Tiger, tiger! was the original title of The Stars My Destination, a science fiction novel by Alfred Bester originally serialized in Galaxy magazine. The novel in turn took its name from one of the most famous/quoted lines in poetry—William Blake's "The Tyger" (from the Songs of Experience collection): Tyger, Tyger, burning bright / In the forests of the night, / What immortal hand or eye / Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

Big long silence reportedly references the science fiction fanzine The Planetoid, published in the 1930s by American mystery, action adventure, and science fiction writer and fan, Arthur Wilson "Bob" Tucker.
Tiger is awakened probably refers to one of notable Japanese science fiction author, Hirai Kazumasa-sensei's 短編集 (sketchbooks)—虎はねむらない (the tiger is awake?), to which the chapter title presumably alludes.

*Something in here is related to/crosses over with Q.E.D. Shomei Shuryo

Planet murder references American science fiction writer Harry Harrison, best known for the novel Make Room! Make Room!, upon which the film Soylent Green was very loosely, you-can't-tell-anymore-from the-DNA based. He created a number of works with the word "Planet" in them, including the Planet Story novella; books 2 to 6 of the Bill, the Galactic Hero series: Bill, the Galactic Hero on the Planet of Robot Slaves, Bill, the Galactic Hero on the Planet of Bottled Brains, Bill, the Galactic Hero on the Planet of Tasteless Pleasure, Bill, the Galactic Hero on the Planet of Zombie Vampires, Bill, the Galactic Hero on the Planet of Ten Thousand Bars; and the Brion Brandd Series: Planet of the Damned (first published as Sense of Obligation) and Planet of No Return. (IOW, I don't know which work this chapter title refers to, but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd go for the Deathworld series).
The Farthest Shore refers to the third book in Ursula K. Le Guin's fantasy series The Earthsea Cycle.
World Ice most likely refers to Iceworld, a 1953 SF novel by Hal Clement.
All celestial light stars could be/refers to The Lights in the Sky Are Stars, a remarkably prescient novel... [that] tells the story of an aging astronaut who is trying to get his beloved space program back on track after Congress has cut off the funds for it by American SF and mystery writer Fredric Brown.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is a 1966 science fiction novel by American writer Robert A. Heinlein.
Afterimage references American SF writer John Varley—most likely his 1978 short story collection, The Persistence of Vision.

Childhood's End is another Arthur C. Clarke science fiction novel, originally published in 1953 and re-released with a new first chapter in 1990.
