Fellow NaruMai shipper Kai-san asking does anyone know where you can get the original novels?
led me to "revisit" as it were, Ono Fuyumi-sensei's Akuryou or Evil Spirits series, the basis of the Ghost Hunt manga illustrated by Inada Shiho-sensei.
And in reply, I have to say that not much has changed since I last checked (Q1 2007): the novels are still very rare. They're either out of print and/or the possibility of reprint is dim. You can try Amazon Japan for used and new versions which can range from ¥ 2,700 to as much as ¥ 10,000 per novel—that price range is for 悪霊がいっぱい!? Akuryou ga Ippai!? (Filled with Evil Spirits!?), the first Akuryou novel listed at 494 yen, tax included, here.
As a result of Kai-san's query, I ended up with a new backlist. I owe a debt of gratitude to the Japanese Wiki Ghost Hunt entry and 7&Y, as well as the March 2007 Animonster Special Onstage: Ghost Hunt article by Ryuu 'Dhieta' Nagareboshi-san, for helping me put it together. Although hoping the results of this Yasuhara-type investigation are SPR-worthy, please note that some information were deduced only from Google translations of Japanese pages. I apologize in advance for mistakes, misinterpretations, and weasel words used to cover my a*se.

悪霊と呼ばないで (Akuryou to Yobanaide)
No information available but was reportedly released in 1991. Below is the Japanese Wikipedia summary of this volume:
舞台は石川県能登半島にある会員制料亭。代替わりのときに必ず変事が起きるという呪いに挑む。
If I read Google's translation right, this volume, which took place in the Ishikawa Prefecture, covers the Cursed House arc (manga volume eight and nine).
This two-parter reportedly covers the Forgotten Children arc that begins in Ghost Hunt manga volume 10 (cover below) released last 11 April 2008 in Japan.

The Akuryou sequel: The Ghost Hunt series
Not to be confused with the Ghost Hunt manga series, Akumu no Sumu Ie, a two-volume sequel subtitled the Ghost Hunt series came out in 1994. It is known alternatively as the White Heart series.
Once more, if I'm reading the Google translation correctly, this was shelved due to fan pressure. While the Akuryou series is told from the first person perspective of Mai, the Ghost Hunt sequel series reportedly uses a third person point of view. It is also in this series that the new character Hirota Seigi is introduced.
