Nodame returns, Rocket Man opens, Bon Bon Bizarre wraps (Elex and Level manga June 2008)

サイコメトラーEIJI 1

I know I should talk about Psychometrer Eiji; volume 1 of the detective/mystery manga from the creators of Kunimitsu no Matsuri is set to release this June 2008. I know I should do that, spotlight a still unreported debut, as opposed to babbling over another premiering series that I already covered in the 4 June 2008 manga list. But as anyone who knows me knows by now how much I heart Katou Motohiro-sensei and his (Q.E.D., C.M.B.) shōnen manga, I'm sure I can be forgiven for dragging in a Rocket Man synopsis up here, instead of Eiji's. In any case, the former spans only 10 volumes; the latter, 25. That there sprawl gives me more than enough time to feature Eiji and his psychometry ability in the spotlight some other time.

So. Rocket Man:

A jungle and war victims: these fragments constitute Yo Mizunashi's leftover memories. A doctor's son, Yo questions whether these pieces of his "past" aren't just constructs of a delusional mind. He forces himself to remember and in seeking his personal truth, alienates himself from his peers and presents school bullies with an easy target.

One day, while he is being harrassed, a mysterious man—with a gaping wound on his abdomen—appears before Yo and his tormentors. Yo hastens to help the stranger and in return, learns that his unexpected patient goes simply by the name R and that R trades in secrets.

Will this fateful meeting lead to Yo's recovery of his past—?

—is obviously the question we're supposed to expect answered sometime in the course of this espionage series.

That's it for my circuitous lead-up to this month's Komikologi Elex manga release list; let's talk about what else we can expect. Fewer manga are releasing this June (89 versus the 102 titles for May 2008), but there's still a good number of series debuts and standalones—17 in total, a figure I feel is surprisingly risky, given the tight financial clime. Finales number seven if you consider a last volume before hiatus a conclusion (I don't), and penultimate installments, eight. We find that shōnen/sonyun/seinen titles dominate this month's list, with close to 60% of the Elex and Level Comics manga scheduled catering to the male target market. That's nearly double the 33% aggregate for shōjo, soonjung, josei, and BL.

By publisher distribution
Kodansha manga accounts for 28% of the manga scheduled to release in June 2008, followed by Shogakukan (25%), and Shueisha (12%).

のだめカンタービレ 19

We also encounter extremes: Nodame Cantabile returns (gasp!) after a long, half-year absence and the two-parter shōjo collaboration between Shirasawa Marimo-sensei and Toyama Shuko-senseiBon Bon Bizarre—closes. Yup, with both installments streeting on the 11th, it takes us barely a month to get to the second series' conclusion. That the wait for Bon Bon 2 doesn't even stretch past a sixth of what we had to endure for the 19th Nodame tankō is why I'm highlighting the polarity.

I'm tempted to digress—how does Elex Media come up with its release calendar?—but I will. Restrain. Myself. Instead, here are the rest of the manga, manhwa, and singular makita (Prambanana). Note that this list may be subject to skedding changes. Also per my (recent) normal, release links—except for Kedai Tasogare which is totally unmapped territory—are hide/unhide (click to details).

Apakah Loro Jonggrang termasuk fans Bandung Bondowoso? -Synopsis from the Elex thread

chatty marginals (or my version of quarter-column outtakes)

  1. Rocket Man: My synopsis derives from this EMO forum thread. Here's the original Indonesian.

  3. The Age of Chaos: That this series is by the manga-ka of Kaiouki and that it IS Shura no Toki—based on the cover used in the June Komikologi Elex—are certain. Except there are some discrepancies raised by that same Komikologi edition that I felt I should point out:
    • Elex volume 1 cover is not the original; it's the cover of volume 11.
    • Elex maintains that the historical manga has only four volumes out and the series is still ongoing, whereas all other sources (Wiki, Kodansha Book Club and Baka-Updates Manga) state that Shura no Toki finished at 15 volumes.
    • I'll advise other details after a get a look-see of this manga expected to street on 11 June (with a premiere price tag of IDR 15,000!)
  4. Bobobo-bo bo-bobo: Komikologi Elex June advises that volume 13 will come out this month; I can't, however, find a street date for volume 12 (must've missed it; only know that it was supposed to street sometime in May).
  5. Change Guy: Volume 18 was released in Korea in April 2002 (the 20th, to be exact), not 2003.05.
  6. Charming Junkie: The Indonesian volume 9, not 8, was released 7 May 2008.
  7. Delusive Voice: According to Baka-Updates Manga, Usotsuki Voice was serialized in Hakusensha's Bessatsu Hana to Yume, but eventually published in tankōbon under the Lady's Comics imprint, thus accounting for its dual shōjo/josei citizenship.
  8. The Little Angels, Milky & Cute: Baka-Updates Manga notes that this series is on hiatus at two volumes for reasons set out here, but this hasn't stopped Elex from labeling it a two-parter. (Implication: Acquire at your peril.)
  9. Romance of the Three Kingdoms: Similar to Bobobo 12, the May street date advisory for Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Sangokushi 1 must've passed me by.
  10. Yureka: Haksan, not Daiwon, publishes this sonyun manhwa series. And while this master list indicates the release of volume 11, like Bobobo-bo bo-bobo and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I can't find the May street date for volume 10.
  11. If You Were Here: My latest advised volume for Yoshimura Akemi-sensei's Anata ga Ireba is 4 (26 February 2008). Either I missed the volume 5 street date or just like Life 6, it will also be released this month, without any Komikologi Elex June fuss.
  12. Jepang Tenggelam: See my Anata ga Ireba note above and substitute Japan Falling volume 1 for volume 4 and we're stick a fork in it. Although seeing that the second tankōbon was released in Japan the same month and year—2006.06—as the first (unless there's a typo), perhaps the Level-released Jepang Tenggelam 2 also went on sale the same time as volume 1?   [beat]   Nah. We're probably going to see the second installment this June.
  13. Magister Negi Magi: I could just say by now that Schedules are subject to change and be done with it but I won't. My latest advised volume (for Negima!) is 11 (22 April 2008). Meanwhile, here's Elex telling us that we're already up to volume 13 in June. While yes, volume 12 was among the titles in May, I say: Just look for volume 12 or ask the Gramedia salespeople about it.

P.S. I'm probably wrong about Babysitter Gin 9 being the last volume. If anyone knows otherwise, kindly leave me a comment? Thank you ^^
