Updated with the 30 September 2009 manga

Barairo My Honey © Ohmi Tomu/
Shogakukan

All systems green and no weather days permitting, we should be getting the series finale to Nakajo Hisaya's Hana-Kimi manga this September 2009.

I can still remember the +90-dB Kyaaa!s and Finally! smugness that attended Level's first release of this a-dowable series back in 2006 — when the imprint was still based in Surabaya, and now, it's time to bid Sano x Mizuki bah-ha-hai... (with Level now housed in Palmerah.)

September 2009 "Executive Summary"

Twenty-eight manga have been tentatively scheduled for September 2009 (according to Komikologi), 12 of them series premieres, two of which—Jio by Kishimoto Seishi and Sora Flight Attendant by Yajima Masao & Hikino Shinji—were inherited from the past months.

The rest of the new manga

A josei and shoujo manga have me specifically breaking out into hyperventilation: Barairo My Honey by Ohmi Tomu that Level is releasing retitled My Lovely Honey and Triple Kiss by Shimaki Ako.

My Lovely Honey by Ohmi Tomu
Originally serialized in Petit Comic, Barairo My Honey by Ohmi Tomu stars printing company employee Koume who has a date with destiny — in the guise of a tiger! [From Aerandria Scans' summary]

Am telling you now, this three-volume series is chou romachikku! I actually prefer it to the more popular Midnight Secretary that Ohmi-sensei also created (though I wouldn't mind if Level also releases the latter).

Triple Kiss by Shimaki Ako
Meanwhile, Triple Kiss by Shimaki Ako (Gekka no Kimi manga-ka) is apparently a rabu triangle story. Yukino fell in love with a boy who promised her that they will meet again if she remains a good girl; transfer student Seiji seems to fit that first love's profile, but another guy Hikaru claims to have the same memory.

After a hiccup with Shimaki Ako-sensei's Mucha Kucha Daisuki (that Elex released as Crazy for You), I've loved what I've read of Shimaki-sensei's works. Am hoping Triple Kiss, originally serialized in Cheese! will top the anthology Suki ni Naru Made Matte AKA Please Wait Until I Fall In Love, which is currently my Shimaki Ako bar.

Efon O

So even if Level didn't, am paw-printing these two series as Must-Haves. « Edit: Neither of these manga are releasing in September.

New manga blah-blah continued after the manga list.

New manga continued...

As you see from the list above, two of the manga premieres are slated to release this 2 September: Attack!! and Fly, Daddy, Fly.

The following are also set to debut: Cesare by Souryo Fuyumi, Kyoko Karasuma's Case Files (Karasuma Kyouko no Jikenbo) by Hiroi Ouji and Kozaki Yusuke, Officer Monju (Seigi Keikan Monju) by Miyashita Hiroki (Level attributes to manga to a Yamashita Hiroki in Komikologi), Shadow Skill by Okada Megumu (the revived version by Kodansha), Zenith (Jinasu - Zenith) by Yoshida Satoshi, and the long-running Zipang by Kawaguchi Kaiji (this seems to be kin to another Kawaguchi Kaiji-sensei manga also scheduled for this September: the second volume of A Spirit of The Sun).

Kyoko Karasuma's Case Files by Hiroi Ouji and Kozaki Yusuke
Karasuma Kyouko no Jikenbo AKA Kyoko Karasuma - Detective of the Asakusa Police Department is a futuristic, supernatural police procedural featuring the sixteen-year-old Kyoko who investigates criminals straight out of Asian myths and legends, Oni and Tengu being just some of her adversaries. [From Baka-Updates Manga's description]

Kozaki Yusuke-sensei, responsible for the character design of Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto and Speed Grapher anime, illustrates the manga still ongoing in Gentousha's Comic BIRZ (in which Saitoh Misaki's Hinata no Ookami - Shinsengumi Kidan, published by Elex Media as Wolf's Sanctuary was also serialized).

Baka-Updates Manga recommends this if you also like Ghost Hunt, Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna, and Amatsuki. And I ♡ do.

Cesare by Souryo Fuyumi
This seinen series by the creator of Mars is based on the story of Cesare Borgia, the Spanish-Italian condottiero, son of Pope Alexander VI, and inspiration and real-life model of Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince.

I will babble about the other manga premieres when they actually street.

Continuing series

Most notable: the reappearance of Basara (with volume 11) and A Spirit of The Sun or Taiyou no Mokushiroku (volume 2). Preceding tankou were released 25 November 2008. « Edit: Only A Spirit of The Sun 2 released in September.

Also, unless I was asleep in August (and I don't think I was, beyond the usual physiologically-required), Tokyo Juliet 8 has yet to street. This monthly, however, has Tokyo Juliet 9 in a holding pattern. I'm presuming the eighth will also release this September. « EDIT: Tokyo Juliet 8 released on September 9.

BTW, this represents the fourth appearance of Team Medical Dragon 9 in a monthly listing; it has been present — but not accounted for — since the June sked. « EDIT: Team Medical Dragon 9 is accounted for in the 30 September schedule.

Nakayoshi Lovely Grapes manga anthology: Be yourself (street date: 2 September 2009)

Nakayoshi Lovely: Grapes front cover

Nakayoshi Lovely: Grapes
Published in Indonesia by PT Elex Media Komputindo

I mentioned in the Elex 2 September manga post that I was gonna spin off the summaries to four of the Kodansha shoujo one-shots in Nakayoshi Lovely ~Grapes~ (Issue 6) that goes on sale next Wednesday.

Mischief managed here. Blurbs available for this issue themed Be yourself include: Cocoa! Part II by Kashiwagi Shiho (this resumption of Tsubame's story breaks the no continuations rule; Elex sez ehe, maap); Junior High Debut! by Minazuki Shin; Spring Love by Takagami Yuriko; and Starving by Sakuya Ippo.

Cocoa! Part II by Kashiwagi Shiho

Coerced by male megastar Chio, Tsubame, too, plunges into the world of celebrities and entertainment. Her first job: to deliver a script for an upcoming project to Chio in his classroom in the Entertein division — something even co-"star" classmates would find difficult to pull off. Moreover, if found sneaking into the building, the punishment is expulsion.

Wait... expulsion?!

Junior High Debut! by Minazuki Shin

Toko resolves to change her looks once she enters her new school, and it appears her plan has succeeded; several girls (and not a few boys) tell her that she looks cute. This delights Toko to no end, even pushing her to participate in the student council — anything, in fact, to distance her from her pre-junior high self.

But during a committee meeting, someone whom Toko would've preferred never to meet again appears: Midori Kono, her classmate back in fourth grade and the boy wholly responsible for Toko's transformation to guarded and diffident during grade school.

Spring Love by Takagami Yuriko

People often mistake Saya for someone older because of her taller than the average junior high kid height. Every time she goes to the convenience store, senior high students would always try to pick her up. One day, one of the mini-market's staff tries to help her, only to be elbowed aside. Apparently, this chibi knight is also a senior high student. At first, he and Saya get into an argument, but as they get to know one another, eventually become close.

But not close enough evidently for Saya to reveal that she is much younger than he supposes!

Starving by Sakuya Ippo

Tae has never dreamed of having a boyfriend; her head's too full of food and... food. Additionally, she thinks no one would like her enough to propose to her. So imagine her shock when someone (whom she doesn't know all that well) actually confesses his feelings for her. Tae's friends, equally incredulous at the romantic development, surmise that the guy is probably a member of some club, if not the son of a Sumo wrestler.

The guy is question, So, turns out to be none of these. He first started liking Tae after seeing her compete in an eating contest during the sports festival (something that Tae entered with utmost enthusiasm because she couldn't stand seeing the absolutely delish food). Furthermore, So doesn't eat that much and thinks Tae is the same.

So there goes Tae's dream of being treated to cake and stuff, as per a girlfriend's right. Instead, she has to live with a tummy constantly grumbling that it can't survive simply on love, no matter how yummy!

Valentine's Day finds Watanuki baking chocoretto for everyone and snagging none for himself (unlike Doumeki who's deluged with it) in CLAMP's xxxHOLiC volume 4.

Adding insult to injury, Doumeki even ate the chocolate Watanuki made for Himawari. On their way home, Watanuki and Doumeki encounter Zashiki-Warashi, who is looking for a special chocolate — and locks on to the one in Doumeki's soul: Watanuki's candy. Doumeki falls comatose after the soul is removed, and Yuuko tells Watanuki to retrieve it, lest Doumeki sleep an eternal sleep. [Adapted from Amazon's description of xxxHOLiC 4 (Del Rey edition) and this Wikipedia article]

In other continuing Level manga, AirGear, to be precise, Ikki and team face their most blood-curdling opponent yet: Behemoth. [Adapted from Amazon's description of Air Gear 7 (Del Rey edition)]

Premieres and Series Finales

RED (Living On the Edge) by Muraeda Kenichi concludes with volume 19, while Mase Motoro's Ikigami debuts. In my upcoming Level manga post, I included a blurb for this seinen series retitled Death's Notice, and here it is again, in case you missed it the first time around:

Ikigami tells of a 1984-Big-Brother-like Japanese government's initiative to prod citizens into more productivity by arbitrarily issuing death notices or ikigami as an extreme wake-up call. The story follows the young messenger who serves up these death advisories to their targets.

Ikigami has been adapted into a movie starring Matsuda Shota-san (Nishikado Soujirou, Hana Yori Dango) as Fujimoto Kengo, the bureaucrat Grim Reaper.

Meanwhile, the creator of SHOOT, Oshima Tsukasa, brings us another sports manga, Attack!!. Harutaka Kato is a normal senior high student with an abnormal ability: that of leaping absurbly high. Maiko, the school volleyball club's manager, badgers Harutaka to join, despite the team already possessing one ace, Yuta Kaneko, who apparently can block all of Harutaka's smashes. Will this frustrating development make Harutaka back off?

The third premiering manga is Fly, Daddy, Fly by Kaneshiro Kazuki and Akishige Manabu. It's superficially similar to Life Existence in that Fly, Daddy, Fly is also a story of a father's love for his daughter. Forty-seven year old salaryman Suzuki Hajime's daughter, Haruka, is beaten up by another senior high student, boxer Ishihara. Hajime plans to avenge Haruka, along with a group of high school students who agrees with Hajime's lex talionis, or law of retaliation.

Perhaps it's because Goong's last volume (#15) was released more than a year ago as opposed to Alive's last volume (#16) which went on sale two weeks ago that the reception for the former is, shall we say, warmish.

Which is a pity because Shin has grown some, and the observation made by Twitterer mbeasi-san: that every real issue in Goong can be ultimately summed up with, Shin is an idiot, (that I had to concede with a LOL) had already been nullified by developments in the volumes leading up to 15.

So let me drum up some Ganbare! enthusiasm for Goong here.

Goong 16 by by Park SoHee

When we last left our prince and princess, Chae Kyeong had agreed to divorce her husband so that Shin could keep his crown. Not apprised of his wife's reasons, Shin had promptly resolved to uncover the truth and win Chae Kyeong back.

Will he be able to?

Considering the soonjung manhwa by Park SoHee is still ongoing, I think it's safe to infer that they will continue to be together.

New manga

m&c! is also releasing the Family Game (Kazoku Gokko) shoujo manga by Karasawa Chiaki, originally serialized in LaLa DX. This standalone follows the story of the orphaned Mei. To earn money, Mei agrees to play the eldest daughter of a faux family and live with five total strangers under one roof. [Adapted from Midnight Scans' summary, excerpted by Baka-Updates Manga]

The summaries of Not An Angel (Tenshi ja Nai!!) volumes 5 and 6 are after the manga list.

Synopses continued...

Not An Angel 5
Tenshi ja Nai!!天使じゃない!! 」 by Shigematsu Takako

To cheer up Hikaru whose relationship with Ayase-sensei seems to be floundering, Izumi invites her to Kyoto while he's filming a movie. Pest Kurobe is again in evidence, and this time, he might really uncover Izumi's secret!

The above and below summaries have been adapted from Go! Comi's for the same volumes (here and here)

Not An Angel 6

Nope, Izumi's real identity is safe, but Hikaru's relationship with him might not be!

I will tweak this with my speculations for Shinobi Life 3, after I finish volume 2.
