ZIG★ZAG 9

Published in English by Chuang Yi

This week's Chuang Yi English manga sees sunny Taiyo at a crossroads as graduation looms in Zig Zag volume 9 of 9, while a feverish Hikari unwittingly tests Kei's none-too-firm resolve by throwing herself at him in S.A volume 7.

Elsewhere, World Embryo's Riku narrowly escapes a nasty run-in with Takao in volume 5 as the Fuhrer, on the lookout for potential trouble, personally inspects the Northern and Eastern Garrisons' Joint Training Exercises in Fullmetal Alchemist volume 21.

And let's not forget Rei, Kilala and Sylphy who finally meet the sixth Princess, Jasmine in Disney's Kilala Princess volume 5 of 5.

Longer Chuang Yi blurbs and covers after the manga list.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! anime? (Breathe, girl, breathe!)

会長はメイド様! 7

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! © Fujiwara Hiro/Hakusensha

I don't know how I missed this bit of ecstatic, but apparently, the Kaichou wa Maid-sama! shoujo manga by Fujiwara Hiro is getting the anime treatment. (Thanks, Puiying-san for the happy-making heads-up.)

Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, published as My Sweet Kaicho in Indonesia by m&c!, follows Ayuzawa Misaki, tuff student council prexy of a formerly all-boys school who part-times as wait staff in a maid café (and as a butler on at least one occasion). Nemesis and love interest Usui Takumi discovers Misaki's secret life and... (you know what breathless "blackmailing" kinda thing comes next). The latest manga volume released in these parts is volume 6.

According to ANN, the announcement about the anime imprimatur appeared in the October 2009 issue of Hakusensha's LaLa mangazine. Seiyuu Kobayashi Sanae and Sugita Tomokazu reprise their drama CD roles as Misaki and Usui in the anime which is slated to air on TBS (air date, episode count, and animation studio not yet advised). Joining the actors playing Misaki and Usui are Tanaka Rie (as Satsuki, owner of Maid Café Latte), Yoshino Hiroyuki, Nakamura Yuuichi, and Kakihara Tetsuya (as the idiot trio: Shirakawa Naoya AKA Shiroyan, Kurosaki Ryuunosuke/Kurotatsu, and Sarashina Ikuto/Ikkun respectively), Shimono Hiro (Vice President Yukimura Shouichirou), and Kaida Yuki (Hyoudou Aoi), the same voice cast as the drama CD's.

Ahhhh, I can't wait!

Level Comics manga awaiting street dates (DO WANT: Barairo My Honey 1 and Triple Kiss 1)

トリプルKISS 1

Triple Kiss © Shimaki Ako/Shogakukan

Level Comics' turn to get manga already announced but not yet released post (Elex's is already done).

Outside of Momochi Reiko's Bond (Kizuna) which hasn't been spotted on the radar since July last year (but Has Not Been Forgotten), I'm hoping volume 1 of Barairo My Honey, that Level is releasing titled My Lovely Honey, and Shimaki Ako's Triple Kiss 1 (of 2) will be among the manga that get trucked into stores this October. Also antsy for volume 10 of Gokusen. Can't have enough shoujo/josei romance, after all. (Shinkumi ♡)

I also speculate that one/some of these new manga (from the Level 2009 schedule Aryaguna-san gave me last year) might snag an October street date: Angel Heart, Bambino!, Brave Story, The Drops of God (probably Kami no Shizuku), Fist of Northern Sky (Hokuto no Ken?), Ghost Mama, Iliad, Restore Garage 251, and Wilderness.

Elex Media Next Attraction manga? (DO WANT: In a Distant Time/HaruToki 15)

遙かなる時空の中で 15

Harukanaru Toki no Naka de
© Mizuno Tohko, KOEI Co.
Hakusensha

Considering the last Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 3 anime was just announced at KOEI's Neoromance 15th Anniversary (deets over at ANN), I'm hoping that Elex will release In a Distant Time volume 15 (which didn't get a September street date) this October.

Same wish goes for these manga: Katou Motohiro-sensei's Q.E.D. (Q.E.D. Shomei Shuryo) volume 32 and Hidaka Banri-sensei's Akiyoshi Family Series, specifically, Sekai de Ichiban Daikirai AKA Akiyoshi Family Series 5 that Elex is retitling I Hate You The Most.

I think I can live without Aihara Miki-sensei's Prince's Girlfriend (Oujisama no Kanojo) for a little while longer.

Review of wayang manga Garudayana in The Jakarta Globe

Garudayana front cover

Garudayana © Is Yuniarto
Published in Indonesia by m&c!

English daily The Jakarta Globe has a review of Garudayana, local comics artist Is Yuniarto's take on the classic Mahabharata wayang, launched under m&c!'s Indonesian comics line KOLONI. Stumbled over the link to Putting a Javanese Spin on Manga in m&c!'s Facebook.

Here's an excerpt:

What differentiates Garudayana from other comic books are the characters, which are taken from the Mahabharata wayang. The protagonists include the mighty Gatotkaca, the Pandavas brothers and the clownish Punakawan trio.

Despite the characters, Yuniarto emphasizes his work is not simply a retelling of the Mahabharata story.

And here's a sample preview page from the creator's site (Thank you, Is Yuniarto-san!):

Preview Garudayana comic page 2

Ooh, it appeals. It definitely appeals to the ex-History and Communications major in me.

Anyway, it looks like I'll be paying a visit to a Gramedia soon—and not because I'm trying to complete my Skip Beat! collection.

InuYasha The Final Act premieres on Animax Asia 10 October 2009

InuYasha The Final Act ex Animax Rave

InuYasha The Final Act © Takahashi Rumiko/Shogakukan, Yomiuri TV, Sunrise 2009

InuYasha The Final Act, the continuation of the InuYasha anime, premieres 10 October 2009, Saturday, at 7PM WIB, on Animax Asia, one week after its initial telecast in Japan (just like what happened with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood).

In InuYasha The Final Act, InuYasha and Kagome along with cohorts Shippo, Miroku, and Sango continue to battle Naraku and flunkies for possession of the Shikon no Tama or Jewel of Four Souls. Seiyuus Yamaguchi Kappei-san and Yukino Satsuki-san reprise their roles as InuYasha and Kagome in the 26-episode sequel that adapts the last 21 volumes of Takahashi Rumiko-sensei's manga (the finale volume 56 was released last February; the latest Indonesian manga is volume 45). The anime OP Kimi ga Inai Mirai is performed by Do as Infinity; the ED With You by AAA.

Definitely looking forward to!

Black Lagoon 1, Team Medical Dragon 9, Kyoko Karasuma's Case Files 1, Zipang 1, Zenith 1 (Level Comics 30 September 2009 manga)

ジナス-ZENITH- 1

Jinasu - Zenith © Yoshida Satoshi/Kodansha

Level Comics closes the month with five new mangaBlack Lagoon, Kyoko Karasuma's Case Files, Officer Monju, Zenith, and Zipang—all competing with Team Medical Dragon volume 9 for Most Popular GET! of 30 September. At last check, Black Lagoon had snagged the prize, earning it the top blurb spot of this post.

(I actually has summaries for all volumes releasing, with the exception of the European comic Michel Vaillant - The Mystery Driver, so stick around (before and after the fake cut)).

Black Lagoon by Hiroe Rei

Pirates attack a Japanese vessel sailing the South China Sea. Because of a dangerous booty entrusted to him, one of the passengers, salaryman Rokurou Okajima, is taken hostage. Thus begins Rokurou Rock's deadly involvement with Dutch the Boss, Benny the Mechanic, and Revy Two Hand, mercs who ply the Southeast Asian waters delivering anything, anywhere. [With additions from Amazon's series description (VIZ Media edition)]

Zenith by Yoshida Satoshi

A man wanders city to city without direction or destination. With only a sketch and a mysterious mark on the palm of his hand as clues, he searches for his lost memory and identity. In each city he enters, everything points to a certain Zenith and the rumored resurrected dead. Just what is Zenith and what is the truth behind claims that he is a murderer?

Kyoko Karasuma's Case Files by Hiroi Ouji and Kozaki Yusuke

In Karasuma Kyouko no Jikenbo, 16-year old Kyoko Karasuma works as a detective for the Asakusa Police Department Special Division. A high weirdness factor characterizes her caseload: a horned corpse found in Sumidagawa, children who have disappeared mysteriously, and a sadistic serial killing are just some of the cases she investigates. Beyond uncovering who is behind these bizarre crimes, who is Kyoko, really?

I mentioned in the monthly post that Kozaki Yusuke-sensei who arts the manga still ongoing in Gentousha's Comic BIRZ was responsible for the character design of the Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto and Speed Grapher anime.

The Iroha connection, plus because Baka-Updates Manga recommends this series if you also like Ghost Hunt, Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna, and Amatsuki (and I do), am probably going to GET! this.

Synopses of Officer Monju 1, Zipang 1, Team Medical Dragon 9, and Lucky Luke - Rodeo after the manga and ROMIC list.

(Blurbs may contain   SPOILERS!)

In The Ruler of Nabari volume 2, slated to release September 30, the Fuuma ninja consent to inhibit the use of the Shinra Banshou secret art within Miharu, although leader Fuuma Kotarou remains unconvinced. Meanwhile, Miharu faces a choice of helping Yoite, Iga's kinjutsushō Kira wielder, who attacked the Fuuma village with the Grey Wolves, change the past and erase Yoite's existence. Elsewhere, in another continuing manga streeting on the same day (you know, the gorgeous boys graffiti one), the press descend on Kazami Dorm in droves, clamoring for Sono's thoughts on the likelihood of Yuki becoming heir to the Toka ikebana style. As if he didn't have enough problems already, Sono also runs into Suwa's younger sister who had previously mistaken him for a molester, when the Drama Club seeks B.B Company's help in designing a costume for her. Meanwhile, Saho continues to doubt Taiyo's feelings but backs off from an out-and-out confrontation. [Adapted from Chuang Yi's summary of the same volume]

Summaries for the final Rocket Man (volume 10) and Juvenile Remix (volume 2) are after the manga list.
