Black Butler 12, The Recipe for Gertrude 5/5, Exposing Game 2/2 (Elex Media 23 November 2011 manga) [UPDATED]

Sebas-chan's baaaaaack! (Oh, and me × Grell, too :P)

Black Butler 12 (Elex Media)

Kuroshitsuji © Toboso Yana/Square Enix [Serialized in GFantasy]
Published in Indonesia as Black Butler by Elex Media

Thanks to Aurora Society's ‘perfect resurrection,’ soulless corpses reanimate, and they begin attacking the passengers. A bespectacled man arrives to investigate the imperiled ship, and as far as his eyes can see — ice fragments like white mice.

Enter, stage left! Shinigami Ronald Knox into Black Butler's Ship Voyage arc, the sixth such (after the Kidnapping, Jack the Ripper, Curry Contest, Noah's Ark Circus and Phantomhive Manor Murder). Peeps over at Kuroshitsuji Wiki sum up Ronald Knox as Grell Sutcliff's subordinate to collect souls and to investigate the mystery behind the bizarre dolls.

Black Butler XII compiles chapters 53 through 57: That Butler, Brawl; That Butler, Unparalleled; That Butler, In Vain; That Butler, Guess; and That Butler, Struggle. [*NOT Elex chapter titles]

The latest Kuroshitsuji chapter is 63: That Butler, Training. I don't know if this chapter, released 19 November, is included in volume 13 due to release in Japan this 27 December.

I preview the Exposing Game and The Recipe for Gertrude finales after the release list. Highlighting here the manga debuts — The Dog's Magical Touch and More a Flower Than a Flower. The first, originally Anisaki Yuna's Himitsu no Wantacchi, straddles the line between shoujo and kodomo, while the second, Narita Minako's ongoing Melody serial Hana Yori mo Hana no Gotoku was meant to premiere last 28 September and was first retitled Beauty Beyond Flower. (I wish Elex had stayed with its first choice, or used the AKA More Flowerlike than the Flowers :P) [Continued after the release list]

The Dog's Magical Touch vol 1 of 3
By Anisaki Yuna

A magical puppy's powers allow ten-year-old Mao to leap forward seven years; as a 17-year-old, she can definitely date senior high-schoolers! The problem is her transformation only lasts seven minutes. Can Mao confess her love within seven minutes?

On reading the blurb, the first thing that came to mind was another Grade Schooler Age Transformation thingy — Fukushima Haruka's Otona ni Nuts (AKA Instant Teen - Just Add Nuts). Except in the case of The Dog's Magical Touch, apparently, you just add a puppy :D

I noted earlier that The Dog's Magical Touch dips into both shoujo—Elex hypes the thing as a romantic comedy with cute and adowable art—and kodomo (Himitsu no Wantacchi first serialized in Tentoumushi Special, a publication for kids). Since Elex adds that the story is not only funny but also very romantic, I slot it under shoujo. (Just not Flower Comics-esque shoujo :D)

Other Anisaki Yuna manga
This section is hella  l—o—n—g  so [click] only if reaaally interested.

Himitsu no Wantacchi isn't the only canine-friendly manga Anisaki Yuna has produced; there's also the two-volume Shippo de Happy!!, also published by Tentoumushi Comics. m&c released it here as Happy Tail!

Anisaki Yuna-sensei is prolly more famed for her shoujo smut, largely featuring megane bishies, though that's not why I stalk her (OK, that's why ^^;;). Still, Elex has managed to publish a couple of her ‘safe’ shoujo romances: LUV ~Ai toka Koi toka~, retitled LUV ~Suka Apa Cinta?~ that headlines one of this blog's most popular posts, The ABCs of Manga: Shoujo Manga-ka version, and Muteki na Diva! released here as Invincible Diva.

Since I stalk Anisaki Yuna-sensei, listing here what I've collated of her backlist (it's grown—and how!—since I last wrote about it in July 2007):

Shoujo unless noted otherwise.

Also, the Anisaki Yuna Kessakushuu short story anthologies:

  2. Check!! (FC: 1998.07)
  3. H2→R Hot heart→rhythm (FC: 2001.04)

Anisaki Yuna top-bills the Darenimo Ienai Rabu&H ~Ikenai Ren'ai~ Dessert KC anthology (2010.05) with Tsukishima Haru (Oni Kare, Suki Kirai Suki manga).

I think that's about it, barring inclusions in other shoujo anthologies and uncompiled one-shots :D (Sawry for going overboard. I warned you about the stalkage.)

More a Flower than a Flower vol 1 of 9+
By Narita Minako

Noh actor Kento has been performing since he was a child. His days are filled with lessons from his grandfather and teacher, allowing him to play a god, a beautiful woman, even a demon on stage.

The charming story of a young Noh actor with a thousand dazzling masks, says Elex. It only needed Noh for me to be sold, Japanese grammar-constructed More a Flower than a Flower title notwithstanding. (As I sed above, I prefer the original Beauty Beyond Flower or the more idiomatic More Flowerlike than the Flowers.)

Hana Yori mo Hana no Gotoku runs in Melody mangazine; nine volumes have been compiled as of July 2011.

Other Narita Minako manga
Yes, Hana Yori mo Hana no Gotoku is Narita Minako's newest shoujo serial, but she's prolly most known for the Acting, America, Androgynous Male Lead, Crossdressing comedy/slice of life Alien Street (eight of eight volumes published in Japan between 1981.05 and 1993.06) and the America, Twins, Acting Cipher (12 of 12 volumes published between 1985.07 and 1990.12.) Both were serialized in LaLa (in Cipher's case, also in LaLa DX) and reissued in bunko: Alien Street rereleased in four bunko volumes in 1995.12; Cipher in seven bunko volumes from 1997.03 to 1997.09.

Actually, everything in Narita Minako-sensei's backlist has been reissued in bunko. Everything, except one-volumers Mezase Shōjo Manga-ka!! (Jets Comics: 1992.04) and Welcome (Hana to Yume Comics: 1978.08). Proof: the Cipher spin-off Alexandrite (seven of seven volumes between 1991.11 and 1994.12; Alexandrite bunko (four of four volumes from 2000.06 to 2000.09); Natural (11 volumes from 1998.03 to 2001.12); Natural bunko (five volumes between 2003.09 and 2004.07); Aitsu (two volumes between 1980.03 and 1980.08); Aitsu bunko (2001.06); Miki & Yuutei (two volumes from 1979.04 to 1979.10); Miki & Yuutei bunko (2001.03); and Sora no Shinwa Chi no Shinwa (Jets Comics: 1988.07); Sora no Shinwa Chi no Shinwa bunko (2001.09).

Now, THAT'S lasting power!

Exposing Game vol 2 of 2

What's going to happen when another Grim Reaper is dispatched to snatch Ren—and Masaoka's—lives? Can Ai still save them, or has he, too, run out of time?

Ai-sama, ganbatte~!

The Recipe for Gertrude vol 5 of 5
By Kusakawa Nari

Gertrude, Sahara and demons Mariotte and Puppen continue with their daily routine, and even Sahara's demon friends are beginning to adapt to life in the human world.

The Recipe for Gertrude 5 also includes a look-see into Gertrude's days before the demon-construct met Sahara.

Other 23 November 2011 highlights

  • Doraemon vol 13 by Fujiko F. Fujio (Right-to-left edition): Wouldn't it be great if we had a clone? The dupe can do stuff we don't want to do. But something's just wrong with having a duplicate. Because it's just not possible that someone else could be our exact copy.
  • Gogogo to the West vol 3 by Konishi Noriyuki: Someone joins Sanzou's group? Who could it be?!
  • Kojiro vol 4 by Muraeda Kenichi: Friendship is a wonderful thing, because it's not something that goes away. And a friend is not just someone close, but someone extraordinary.

Shonen Star 21/2011 ☆ Inuyasha finale

Shonen Star 21/2011 - FC Inuyasha

Inuyasha © Takahashi Rumiko
Shogakukan [Shonen Sunday

Three years have passed since Inuyasha and allies defeated Naraku. Kagome has graduated and the Bone-Eater's well, the portal that Kagome used to go back and forth to the feudal age has vanished. Or has it? When the gateway reopens, Kagome has to decide: stay in present-day Japan or return to Inuyasha's side...

Yeah, yeah, you know what she chooses, especially if you watched InuYasha The Final Act :) Still, the Inuyasha epilogue demands hyping, if only to cap an emotional investment that carbon dates back to 2003 (mine; that's the year I began reading Inuyasha).

To save you going squint mode, ON!, these other ShoStars join Inuyasha on Issue 21's cover line-up:

Collecting the tankou? Most recent volumes: Inuyasha 55 (per 2011.11.16), Dr. Koto 8 (11.02), Detektif Conan 64 (10.26), Kekkaishi 10 (10.19), Wild Life 20 (9.28), My First Mr. Akuno 5 (8.15), Defense Devil 5 (8.10) and Takkoku!!! 2 (7.20).

Upcoming series
So there goes Inuyasha (and likely Magical Iroha by Inoue Kazurou because it doesn't appear on Issue 21's cover). What comes next? According to Elex, Alice in Borderland (Imawa no Kuni no Alice) by Aso Haro (Hyde & Closer manga-ka), BUYUDEN by Mitsuda Takuya (Major) aaaaand Silver Spoon (Gin no Saji: Silver Spoon) by Arakawa Hiromu (needs no intro/refresher).

(Imma still cherish hopes that Watase Yuu's Arata Kangatari makes it into ShoStar.)

Still not enuf? Here are the other 23 November 2011 manga and manhwa
